Brayford Pool is the heart of the City of Lincoln, Lincolnshire. It was a Roman port connecting the city to the sea during the reign of Emperor Nero. The north bank was regenerated in the latter twentieth century into a vibrant social hub. In the twenty first century, the south bank became home to the thriving University of Lincoln. It represents of the past, present and future of Lincoln as well as the ever-changing flow of ideas.
In conjunction with a global initiative to spread ideas further, the TEDx program was born in 2009 to enable individuals and communities worldwide to hold locally relevant and independent events. As part of the global TEDx community spanning over 150 countries, TEDxBrayfordPool is Lincoln’s very own platform for ideas worth spreading.
Over the past few years there has been an increasing spotlight on the city of Lincoln. It is fast becoming a cultural hub while maintaining strong links to its heritage - it’s the birthplace of mathematician George Boole, the tank and, during the First World War was one of the largest producers of aeroplanes in the country. It’s a city of academic success across a variety of fronts including teacher training, biochemistry and engineering. It’s the perfect place to generate ideas worth spreading via TEDx, and last two year we proved it!
In 2018 the TEDxBrayfordPool series became one of the fastest growing TEDx series in the UK.
Now in our third year TEDxBrayfordPool and TEDxYouth@BrayfordPool bring national and global attention to Lincoln. These two annual events highlight the best ideas and innovations that the people of Lincoln have to their community and beyond.
TEDxBrayfordPool gives an opportunity for business and community leaders, academics, and innovators to showcase their ideas in unique environment that isn’t available anywhere else in the city. TEDxYouth@BrayfordPool is organised by young people, for young people, and is a place for pioneers, free thinkers, and doers to champion the things that matter to them.
With the addition of the TEDxBrayfordPoolSalon series - unique, intimate gatherings that spark discussion co-curated by the wider community - and TEDxBrayfordPoolWomen we're creating an increasingly strong platform for wider impact driven collaboration in Lincoln.
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast event in nearby Whistler. The annual TEDGlobal conference will be held this October in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, The Audacious Project, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
A TEDx event is a local gathering where live TED-like talks and videos previously recorded at TED conferences are shared with the community. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis by unpaid volunteers. The content and design of each TEDx event is unique and developed independently, but all of them have features in common.
